GREENING GLENELG

Regional Seed bank project

Restore and rewild our habitat with local indigenous species

Our mission is to restore and rewild the urban habitats by establishing a local seed bank and nursery focused on indigenous plant species. This initiative will enhance biodiversity, improve wildlife corridors, reconnect fragmented landscapes, and contribute to carbon sequestration.

Having our own seed bank, nursery, and harvesting ensures a reliable and cost-effective supply of local indigenous plants, boosts community involvement, benefits partners, and is crucial for effective, sustainable habitat restoration in Glenelg.

SEA have received grant funding from NRCL to complete a comprehensive feasibiity study to explore the viability of a local seed bank and nursery in Glenelg. This will assess community needs, identify gaps, seed bank viability and potential partners, as well as preliminary costs. This feasibility study is expected to take 6-8 months to complete.

To identify market gaps, SEA will analyse existing plant supply chains and consult with experts from botanic gardens, ecological consultancies and relevant universities. Collaborations with larger local organisations will provide additional insight. The feasibility study will also evaluate factors such as land suitability, projected demand, operational costs and potential barriers.

Pending the success of the feasibility study, SEA anticipates establishing the seed bank and nursery over the next two to four years.

STAGE 1
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT - Initial community engagement and ideation occurred through Our Community, Our Environment Survey, a conference, and a SEA Group strategic planning day.

STAGE 2
PARTNERSHIPS
- Future engagement will focus on building partnerships and securing in-kind and financial contributions essential for project success.

STAGE 3
ESTABLISHMENT
- Leveraging partnerships, member groups, and community support, we will secure a site and establish the seed bank, nurseries, and storage facilities.

STAGE 4
PROJECT LAUNCH
- With the foundation in place, the project will move into the active phase of seed collection and propagation, and planting site preparation.
