Portland’s Community Garden

Background

Began in 2009 from a steering committee of Gary Milich, Bernadette Cahill and Wayne Barrett. After taking many forms the Henty Street site was created from a blank canvas in 2013. It became incorporated on the 27th March 2013 as Portland Community Garden Landcare Group Inc. and continued to develop on the DWELP land with funding from the EPA and active involvement from Glenelg Shire Council. It is currently known as Portland Community Garden.

In 2014, Portland Community Garden Landcare partnered with Nature Glenelg Trust to create The Portland Native Plant Display Garden. The garden was created by 25 volunteers (Landcare group and the public). More than 1200 mixed native plants. The large garden has a number of distinct areas and beds, each with a different focus or purpose.

The Portland Community Garden continues to grow in flourish into the future with a multitude of vegetable gardens, fruit orchard, book sales, produce shop, sales of mulch and compost and a community meeting space.
